Smoky Mountain Farm Stay; Pioneer Cabins and Guest Farm

Nestled in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains lies one of my most favorite farms, Pioneer Cabins and Guest Farm, in Townsend, Tennessee!

Yes, please!

I initially stumbled on this location by accident while flipping through the written ads in the back of an organic gardening magazine.  I’m SO very glad I did!  We were so impressed the first time our family stayed years ago, that we decided we would definitely return again.

See why we highly recommend a farm stay at Pioneer Cabins and Guest Farm in Townsend, TN. This was our second visit and you'll see why we are planning on a third! #thankful #love #nature #family #cabin #logcabin #organicfarm #travelingwithkids #healthy #vacation #travel #farmstay #wildandfree #familytravel #visittennessee #parksforall #weloveourparks #lpkids #traveldeeper #familyadventures #letthembelittle #territorialseedcompany #rareseeds #reneesgardenseeds #seedsofchange #beaseedofchange #organic #organicforeveryone #sustainable #smokymountains #Townsend #smokies #nationalparks

Are We There Yet?!

Arriving at Pioneer Cabins, we get an immediate sense of calm, minus the kids in the backseat still excitedly asking, “Are we there yet?!”

The chickens by the office are happily clucking about and walking their run.  They are living on a lovely farm and they seem eager to share it with us for a few days.

Salutations!

The horses and donkey have slowly made their way to the fence to greet us.  They are of course anticipating carrots from visitors.

What a bunch of cuties!

The organic garden beds are perfectly manicured, just asking to be strolled through.  You can hear nothing but the sounds of nature.  Even the cats on the porch seem to be soaking it all in.

That is… until our five children burst forth from our vehicles!  Trisha and her family had joined us this time for our visit (this would be our second stay and Trisha’s first).  I’m sure the owners heard us coming!

Let the Farm Fun Begin!

After a quick check-in, we were shown the community room which was full of games, books, and puzzles to borrow during our stay.  The highlight though was the freshly picked organic produce that lined the shelves and fridge.

Produce brought back from our first visit to the community center

Tomatoes of all colors, sweet corn, potatoes, peppers, green beans, cucumbers, garlic, onions, watermelon, and cantaloupe that tastes like candy!  The owners purchase seeds from some of the same companies that we love and use in our own gardens.

  • Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds
  • Renee’s Garden Seeds
  • Territorial Seed Company

There were also plenty of eggs from the chickens too.  The fresh produce they offer varies with the seasons, so be sure to check out the farm calendar before you go.  The owners even thought to leave paper bags for you to use to carry all of your goodies.  Your arms may get full quickly!  There is even a fresh supply of carrots to feed the horses and donkey.

Home Away From Home

We were escorted by golf cart to our cabin, The Wrangler’s Den, and given a personal walk-through.  The owner is extremely welcoming and was truly happy to show us around.

The cabin was cozy, inviting, and very clean!  The kitchen was fully equipped with all of the cookware we needed to prepare our meals for the week.  This was big for us, since we like to prepare our own meals when on vacation.  It helps us to save money and eat healthy organic food.  It is also easier than trying to search for a “safe” place to eat, for our children with food allergies.

Each cabin also has a private charcoal grill… which made for many wonderful mealtime memories on the deck.  Even the newly renovated bathrooms didn’t disappoint!

Then, of course, there was the story about guests who left food out after dinner for a family of Black Bears during their entire stay!  Yikes!  Yes, unfortunately this is true…just ask!

Obviously, you should NEVER feed bears in the wild.  The owners warn against it and have provided locked trash containers outside to discourage any wandering bears.

Things To Do

Amazing views
Soak in all the views

Included with your private cabin and hot tub (yes, a private hot tub!) are an assortment of farm activities: you can feed the goats, horses and donkey, collect eggs from the chickens, pick organic produce from the gardens, or enjoy the already picked produce set out with care in the community room.

They also have a swing set, fire pit, walking trails, and an outdoor fitness area.  Plenty of options abound for little bundles of energy to explore!

The Great Outdoors

There are an array of nearby attractions as well!  For me, Pioneer Cabins is in the perfect location!  You really get a sense of being in the mountains and the views from the farm are gorgeous!  A short 20 minute drive has you in Pigeon Forge and all of the busyness that comes with it.  You’re still close enough to all the excitement without having to spend all of your time in it.  Even closer than Pigeon Forge is an entrance to the Smoky Mountains National Park and Cades Cove, found within.

Taken on our trip to Cades Cove

We were thrilled to do some of the recommended activities, to include, Cades Cove, Tuckaleechee Caverns, and horseback riding at Davy Crockett Riding Stables

The Simple Things

The wraparound porch, complete with rocking chairs and a swing, just begged for you to slow down and soak it all in.  The kids spent every moment they could outside.  There was never a dull moment.  Our kids were delighted by the simple, meaningful things that the farm offered.

Dinner chores

Something as simple as shucking corn on the porch led to great conversations between cousins.  It was a messy outdoor activity and a huge help with meals. The horses were glad too as they got to enjoy the leftover greens!

It’s always good to share

Our trip fell upon my birthday and we were pleased to welcome a special four-legged guest to share in the festivities!  He belongs to the owners.

So glad you could make it!

The large stones in the front yard were an excellent obstacle course!

Don’t lose your balance

A walk to the community center to get fresh produce was our children’s  favorite thing to do!

Until We Meet Again

One last photo before we head home

Our family’s imaginations were set free at the farm, along with any stresses or worries we had.  Perhaps Pioneer Cabins is the perfect setting for a family vacation to The Smoky Mountains.  I know I agree!
