Make The Most Of Your Unforgettable Florida Kayak Tour
To be honest, when I began my search for a Florida kayak tour, the Space Coast was not the first place that came to my mind. I mean, what does space have to do with kayaking? Actually, quite a lot!

A Day Away Kayak Tour Review
Explore Wild Florida On Merritt Island
Our Florida kayak tour took place in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, located just outside of Titusville, along the Atlantic Ocean. It was established in 1963 and it surrounds the John F. Kennedy Space Center. While the Kennedy Space Center is known mostly for rocket launches and space exploration, the property surrounding it is home to bald eagles (in picture below) and bobcats.
At 140,000 acres, the Refuge provides the necessary habitats for a large variety of plants and wildlife, including a large number of threatened and endangered species. During your visit, you might get the opportunity to see some of the wildlife like manatees, dolphins, alligators, wild pigs, a Florida panther, bald eagles, ospreys, or one of the over 350 different species of birds that call the Refuge home.
Why We Chose A Day Away Kayak Tours
Two words… bioluminescent tour!
It just so happens that Merritt Island is one of the most popular locations in America for bioluminescent kayaking tours. A Day Away Kayak Tours offers a nighttime tour during the winter months that allows you the chance to get up close to one of nature’s greatest wonders, bioluminescent comb jellies.
What is a comb jelly?
Comb jellies produce a chemical reaction that generates a blue light in response to stimuli, such as being touched. Just imagine the ocean’s version of a firefly. And don’t worry, they don’t sting.
Our Mondo Combo Refuge Tour
As a family, we decided to book the Mondo Combo Refuge Tour. It is basically three kayak experiences combined into one tour: a manatee tour, a sunset tour, and a bioluminescent tour. It sounded like the perfect way to take in everything the Wildlife Refuge has to offer.
At the beginning of our Florida kayak tour, we started paddling down the Haulover Canal to find one of Florida’s most loved species, the endangered West Indian manatee. It was cloudy and cool that day, two things manatees are not big fans of, but we were still able to see some manatees as we followed their trail of bubbles. A manatee did surface for air right next to my kayak, so close that it even sprayed me with water. Unfortunately, I wasn’t quick enough to get a picture.
Our tour continued as we paddled back into the Indian River Lagoon. The mangrove forests provide an incredible opportunity to see Florida’s wildlife in its natural habitat.
Up Close With WILD Florida
We maneuvered our kayak deeper and deeper into the Lagoon, where we were able to see horseshoe crabs, bald eagles, blue herons, and alligators. Even a brief stop at a sand bar offered us the chance to observe horseshoe crabs and hermit crabs, all while wild hogs stopped for a drink on the shoreline behind us.
As the sun continued to set, it was the moment we all had been waiting for. With our nets in the water as we paddled through the darkness, everyone patiently waited for someone to yell, “Got one!” Turns out that person was me! There it was in my net, flashing like a firefly. It was no bigger than a fifty cent piece, but it was incredible to be able hold it as it lit up in my palm.
While we were immersed in the comb jelly, we were surrounded by all sorts of different sounds in nature. Since all of the boats were gone from the Canal, the dolphins came in search of food. Due to the darkness, all you could hear was each dolphin coming up for air a couple meters from our kayaks.
And let’s not forget our first encounter with a black drum fish. Imagine, sitting in your kayak, in the dark, out on the open water, and all of a sudden you hear this drumming noise. It gradually gets louder and louder. You start to wonder, “Am I the only one that can hear that?!” Thankfully our guide, Brain, reassured us that it was only a fish making that noise and we weren’t extras on the film set of a horror film. Who ever knew that fish could make noises like that?!?!
Our Florida Kayak Tour Experience With A Day Away Kayak Tours
Brian, our guide, is what made our tour such a memorable experience for our whole family. He used to be a rocket engineer, then became a stay-at-home dad and homeschool parent. As a homeschooling family ourselves, it was great to have a guide we could relate to. As a Master Naturalist, he contains a plethora of knowledge, and is dedicated to eco tourism and getting people to reconnect with nature. Brain is what made our whole trip one we will never forget.
Why We Love Florida Kayak Tours
Because Florida is full of amazing theme parks and attractions, it’s easy to forget about real Florida… the wild side of Florida. The beautiful nature that surrounds us was here long before we first put a man into space.
There’s something about being out in nature that makes you feel grounded no matter where you are. That’s why during our vacations, we love to dedicate time to both the theme parks and the great outdoors. Next time you’re in Florida, PERHAPS you could reconnect with nature and book a tour with A Day Away Kayak Tours.

- A Day Away Kayak Tours does supply you with life jackets and a safety whistle.
- Make sure you apply bug repellent, especially if it has rained a lot.
- Use the restroom before you arrive, as there are no bathroom facilities at the launch site.
- Lock all of your valuables in the trunk of your car before you venture out into your kayak.
What to Wear/Bring
- Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting a little wet. If the wind is calm, I highly recommend wearing UPF repellent light weight pants and a long sleeves top to help ward off the mosquitoes. You might also want to bring an extra set of clothes, just in case you’re paddling with a child who loves to drip water all over you.
- A towel just in case said child gets you partially soaked and you need to dry off when you get back to your car. 😉
- Water shoes or Crocs make for an easier transition in and out of your kayak.
- Some light snacks and a reusable water bottle.
- A dry bag is a great option for carrying your snacks and phone/camera. While it’s hard to capture bioluminescence with a phone/camera, they do come in handy for capturing memorable moments during your tour.
- You may bring a flashlight, although they do provide you with a safety light.

I went on a kayak tour in Tampa many moons ago, but this one looks awesome. Thanks for sharing!
Trisha
You’re welcome, Amanda! I hope you get the chance to go kayaking again soon.

It sounds like a great tour. I would love to see a manatee up close.
Trisha
Manatees always amaze me at how these large animals, are so graceful in the water. Plus, they’re really cute!
Pam
What a cool experience. My kids would love this so I’ll definitely check into it next time we make it to Florida (hopefully sooner rather than later!).
Trisha
Ain’t that the truth! 🤞🏼 I hope you get the opportunity to take part in a kayak tour.
Leeanne
I love how the guide was showing you all the animals. Looks like a great tour.
Trisha
Brian was an outstanding guide! Being able to get up close to some of the animals was the highlight of the tour for my children.
Cindy
OK the idea of snakes and alligators worries me slightly but otherwise this type of trip is right up my alley!
Trisha
It worried me at first too, but as long as you respect the alligator, and keep your distance, they really don’t mind that you are there. I did hold my breath as we paddled by the first alligator. 😉
Stacey Billingsley
What a cool adventure! I haven’t been to Kennedy Space Center since I was a teen. Now I want to go back to the area and give this a try, too! Fun!
Trisha
This was our first visit ever to the Space Coast, and to be honest, I want to go back too! My son says, just about every day, how much he missed the Kennedy Space Center.
Jordan
Love a Florida Space Coast! Great Tips!
Trisha
Thank you, Jordan! We really enjoyed our time we spent on the Space Coast.
Lisa Manderino
The nighttime tour would be cool! I would be a little scared of crocs but what a cool experience!
Trisha
Thankfully, the alligators are more concerned with basking in the sun during the day, and staying in the deep waterways at night.
Cathy
We’re homeschoolers, too, and this sounds like a good educational adventure. Thanks for sharing!
Trisha
You’re welcome, Cathy! (Yay, homeschoolers!)
Lori Nielsen
I love how you were up close and personal with the wildlife! The sunsets are beautiful too. I’ve never even seen a firefly, much less a comb jelly.
Trisha
We need to get you on a kayak tour! You would absolutely love it! They are beautiful creatures.
jen
this looks like a great trip! Kayaking seems so much fun!
Trisha
We had kayaked before, but never while on vacation. It’s become sort of a tradition now.
Casandra
This looks like an incredible way to reconnect with nature!
Trisha
Absolutely! It was the perfect way to start our vacation.
Jennifer
It looks like an amazing experience
Trisha
Yes, it was! We would definitely do it again.
Ethel
Whoah! That’s a heart-pounding sound from a fish (now wonder it’s called a black drum fish), I’d be worried and scared too.
What a great kayak adventure! Must be cool to get up close with a manatee & to catch a comb jelly (and be the first to do so, too).
Trisha
I know, right?! Now imagine hearing that in the pitch dark, while you’re sitting in a kayak!
It was such a great experience for our whole family. Florida has some beautiful wildlife.
kmf
What a cool experience…I wouldn’t think of kayaking here…but definitely will now!
Trisha
It was absolutely beautiful! The perfect spot to see Florida’s untouched natural beauty.
Jordin
I’ve always wanted to kayak! I hope to start this summer. This tour looks awesome!
Trisha
You will have so much fun! My favorite thing about kayaking is that it’s quiet unlike being out on a boat that has a motor. You’re more likely to see wildlife as you paddle quietly along.
Eva Keller
Looks like fun! My grandparents live in Merritt Island and I spent every summer there, plus a handful of other holidays over the years. We never went kayaking but liked to walk down to Manatee Cove every once in awhile to see if we could see any. Can’t wait to be able to go back there.
Trisha
That is so amazing that your grandparents live there! It would be so incredible to be able to just walk and see manatees, anytime you wanted. What a great memory!
Tricia Snow
Paddling through the mangroves is one of my favorite things!
Trisha
The mangroves are such an important part of Florida’s ecosystem. It was amazing to see them growing right out of the water, while their roots were like secret hiding places for other wildlife.
Taci- Life Beyond Zebra
This looks really fun! I would love to give that a try!
Trisha
I hope you get the opportunity to experience a kayak tour someday. You will be hooked! 😉
Missy
We love Kayaking too. I did not know about the comb jelly. Very cool.
Trisha
A few days before we left on vacation, my children were actually watching a documentary all about bioluminescent animals. It was amazing to see it “all click” while on our kayak tour.
Jill
This looks so amazing! Definitely adding it to my list!
Trisha
I hope you get the chance to experience a kayak tour, Jill. It is a wonderful opportunity!
Shirley
Wow, what a fun guide for kayak touring and future travel planning. I love it. Your photos make me want to pack my bags right now!
Trisha
Thank you, Shirley! I am so happy that you enjoyed it. There were times when it was difficult to write this post because I kept wishing we could go back.
Tara
This looks like such a fun time! I love adventure tours while on vacation. Thanks for sharing!
Trisha
You’re welcome, Tara! Adventure travel is one of our favorite things to do.
Wendy Robinson
I’m not a big kayaker but that’s just because I haven’t done it much. BUT, I love that kids can go on this tour and we plan on traveling the states over the next few years and this looks like a fantastic day tour.
Trisha
Our children absolutely loved it! Our guide, Brain, made it a point to get them involved also. I hope you get the chance to visit when you are back in the states.
Oh and the non-tippy kayak helped too! 😉
Amanda
Wow, this looks amazing! The manatees <3 I would love to do this someday soon.
Trisha
The best part about kayaking with the manatees is they are actually very curious about the kayaks so they will come right up to you. It was such an amazing experience.
Hera
I miss living in Florida and be able to enjoy water activities anytime I want. Great tips on kayaking, we used to enjoy it as the sun sets.
Trisha
We were bummed that it was cloudy the day of our tour so we didn’t get a “Florida” sunset. It was still beautiful as it peeked through the heavy clouds as to cast a spotlight on the water.
Michele
We went kayaking in Florida a few years ago and loved it! So much to see and also a great homeschool lesson!
Trisha
It was the perfect homeschool lesson! My kids had so many questions and our guide was so knowledgeable. So it was kind of like a day off for me! 😉
Cathy
Looks like fun! I would love to see a manatee up close! Thanks for the great information.
Trisha
They are a lot bigger than you think, but they are also very gentle. It’s no wonder they are called Sea Cows.
