Their fearless leader, Olivia, adopted her first potbellied pig when she was 14 and quickly saw how big the need was for a pig rescue. She took her dreams and made them into reality by starting a 501c3 nonprofit that focuses on rescuing pot-bellied pals and many other farm animals including goats, sheep, donkeys, and more!

Her mission is simple yet mighty: rescue, educate, and provide sanctuary for all creatures great and small. From finding forever homes for adoptable cuties to offering lifelong refuge for those who need it most, she is spreading love, one snout at a time! Since 2017, they have rescued over 500 abandoned, neglected, and unwanted pot-bellied pigs and have adopted over 350 pigs to loving homes. And, yes, she knows all of their names!

On select days you can take a self-guided tour of the farm for a $10 donation per person, including children, that goes towards supporting their mission and helps cover the essential expenses like the cost of feed, supplies, and vet care. Make sure you check out their events calendar where you can find pig yoga, goat yoga, painting classes, and their special Total Eclipse at the Barn event on April 8th for the solar eclipse!

And just like Charlene and I, Oinking Acres is also a family affair! Olivia’s sister, Jesse, runs The Back Forty next door that features a huge u-pick flower garden and general store.

Natural Valley Ranch in Hendricks County Indiana is just a short 30-minute drive from downtown Indianapolis. Yet, the moment we arrived, we felt worlds away from the city’s hustle and bustle. Natural Valley Ranch promises serenity and escape, and let me tell you, it delivers! As we saddled up for our horseback ride through the picturesque trails, it was as if the world shifted into a slower rhythm. The gentle clip-clop of hooves on the earth and the sprawling beauty of the countryside invited us to soak in every moment.

As we meandered through the trails, we were greeted by the graceful presence of deer, and the sky was alive with majestic birds of prey, with a sense of freedom we could only envy.

After our ride, we stopped at their charming petting zoo, where goats frolicked, pot-bellied pigs basked in the sun, and other farm animals greeted us.  It was an adorable bonus to our day, adding more joy to our already unforgettable experience.

Step back in time and visit a historic jail that operated from 1866-1974! Located in downtown Danville, the Hendricks County Historical Museum offers visitors the opportunity to tour the historic jail which also functioned as the Sheriff’s residence.

Inside, you’ll find artifacts and displays that help tell the story of Hendricks County’s founding, as well as, Indiana’s history. The tour guides are extremely knowledgeable and there is so much to learn and see inside. Some of the highlights include:

  • HISTORY: Hendricks County is celebrating its Bicentennial this year. The museum is full of artifacts that help preserve and share Hendricks County’s past. Plus, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places so it’s quite a sight inside & out!
  • IMMERSIVE: Throughout the home, rooms have been furnished to reflect certain periods in time. Guests can explore an adorable 1940s kitchen, a Victorian parlor, a charming children’s room and even the Sheriff’s office and jail.
  • THE OLD JAIL: Everything from the peeling paint, inmate graffiti and cramped quarters is as it was when the jail closed in 1974. Interesting and spooky, you’ll definitely get a feel for what inmate life was like.

Mayberry Cafe

Attention all Andy Griffith Show fans! Want to get all the Mayberry feels?! Then make sure you stop by the Mayberry Cafe, located in downtown Danville. The Mayberry Cafe was opened in 1989, as a tribute to the Andy Griffith Show, and it’s served up home cooked meals ever since.

Guests can enjoy menu items such as Aunt Bee’s Fried Chicken or Ernest T’s Mountain Dew Mug Cake. While waiting for your “order up” you can enjoy watching episodes of the Andy Griffith Show that are played throughout the restaurant. Want to get some good eats and a taste of an authentic 1950’s diner experience too! The Oasis Diner in Plainfield, IN is located on the Historic National Road (US-40) and has been restored to its original 1954 appearance.

In 2008, the Oasis Diner was listed on the Indiana Landmark’s “10 Most Endangered Indiana Buildings” list, which prompted local efforts to save, restore and relocate this iconic building to its current location.

Guests can stop by and enjoy classic breakfast, lunch and dinner options from the menu. And let’s not forget about dessert… plenty of shakes, malts, beignets and slices of pie to choose from. Good luck ordering because deciding on which tasty sweet to eat isn’t going to be easy!

Just across the Oasis Diner’s parking lot is a section of the National Historic Road. Visitors can take a stroll along the paved walkways to learn about the road’s history and the role it helped play in the creation and popularity of American diner establishments.

    This is absolutely delightful! I’m not familiar with Hendricks County, but after reading about your visit – I definitely want to see it for myself. The animal rescue would be top of my list for visiting.
