Falls of the Ohio State Park (Clarksville)

Did you know there’s a place where you can discover 390 million-year-old ocean fossils in Indiana?!
Welcome to the Falls of the Ohio State Park in the Southern Indiana town of Clarksville! Falls of the Ohio State Park is located along the Ohio River and when water levels are low, it offers a unique experience to hike around and explore 175 acres of prehistoric fossil beds.

Things to Know for Your Fossil Hunt:

  • INTERPRETIVE CENTER: Stop by to learn about the history of the Falls of the Ohio through interactive exhibits, movies and naturalist led programs, including a one hour guided fossil bed hike. (Check their schedule for dates/times). A gift shop & restrooms are located near the lobby.
  • FOSSILS: It is illegal to remove any fossils during your visit to the Falls of the Ohio State Park. Occasionally quarry piles are offered near the parking lot for visitors to collect from… be sure to check with the interpretive center for more details.
  • VISIBILITY: The water covering the lower fossil beds is usually low enough consistently to expose the fossils in Sept and Oct. Visibility during the summer through early winter does occur, however is unpredictable and will depend on weather & water level conditions. (We visited the last week of May)
  • WHAT TO WEAR: Shoes that are suitable for walking over loose rocks and rugged terrain are a must. The ground may also be slick depending on conditions.

Big Four Bridge

The Big Four Bridge, a former railroad truss bridge turned pedestrian and bicycle path, spans the Ohio River, and offers stunning panoramic views of both Indiana and Kentucky. At half a mile long, this bridge is a magnificent structure with a rich history. Originally built in 1895 as a railroad bridge, it connected Indiana to Kentucky and operated until 1969. In 2013, it was transformed into a pedestrian and bicycle path, inviting locals and tourists alike to enjoy its scenic beauty. Accessibility is a priority, with ramp walkways on each side ensuring everyone can cross with ease. Best of all, there is no fee to cross the bridge, making this unique experience an absolute must-visit. (Note that parking fees may apply depending on where you choose to park your vehicle.)

Big Four Rain Bridge

Howard Steamboat Museum

One thing Southern Indiana doesn’t lack is history, and the Howard Steamboat Museum is a prime example! This stunning 1894 Richardsonian Romanesque style mansion has 22 rooms and was once the home of the Howard Family who made their fortune building steamboats on the Ohio River. The first level of the home is preserved exactly as the Howard family had it back then, including 90% of the original family furnishings, giving you a true glimpse into their world.

The top two floors are dedicated to fascinating steamboat history, showcasing the remarkable stories and artifacts from the golden age of steamboats. Outside you can ring a steamboat bell and don’t forget to take a picture in a replica wheelhouse. Explore the rich heritage and unique exhibits that make the Howard Steamboat Museum a must-visit destination for the whole family!

  • HOURS: The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM and Sunday from 12 PM to 3 PM. (EST) Closed on Mondays.
  • ADMISSION: Adults $12, Seniors (65+) and Military $10, Students (ages 6-18) $7, and children under 6 are free.
  • TOURS: There are both guided and self-guided tours available.
  • LOCATION: 1101 E Market Street, Jeffersonville, IN

Check Out Our Multigenerational Vacation Rental

During our Southern Indiana adventure, we had the pleasure of staying in a spacious and luxurious vacation rental right in the heart of downtown New Albany. This 6,000-square-foot loft, spread across the second and third floors, provided the perfect accommodation for our multigenerational vacation. We were impressed by the loft’s amenities, such as the free Wi-Fi, freight elevator for hauling up luggage, and the expansive 1,600-square-foot rooftop yard, which offered a fantastic space for relaxation and gatherings.

The loft’s prime location allowed us to easily explore the vibrant and walkable downtown area, which has recently experienced an explosion of independent businesses and restaurants. From bakeries and cafes, as well as microbreweries and a winery, we had an array of dining options at our doorstep. It was an ideal base for our multigenerational getaway, providing ample space, comfort, and convenience in the heart of downtown New Albany.

The Woods ATV Adventures (Starlight)

We had an absolute blast exploring southern Indiana at The Woods ATV Adventures! We were pleasantly surprised to find such an amazing adventure spot in southern Indiana AND only 30 minutes from Louisville, KY. Our trail boss, Dean, was fantastic! He took us on an adventure across streams, through lush forests, and up hills where we felt like we were climbing to the treetops for some truly breathtaking views. 


The trails are perfect for family fun, offering a mix of thrilling challenges and stunning nature spots. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a newbie, there’s something for everyone. Trust us, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss!

Know Before You Go:

  • You must be 21 years old with a valid driver’s license to drive.
  • You must be 8 years old to participate.
  • Pets are not allowed on the adventures.
  • Indiana State Law states anyone under the age of 18 must wear a helmet. You can rent one there for $5.

The Woods ATV Adventures will be permanently closing on September 15, 2024.

Huber’s Orchard & Winery (Borden)

Nestled in the picturesque Southern Indiana countryside, Huber’s Orchard & Winery offers a yummy escape with its vast fields and vibrant rows of produce ripe for the picking. Throughout the season, the orchard provides a variety of produce to harvest, including blueberries, strawberries, corn, and sunflowers, making it a go-to destination for fresh, locally-grown produce. 

Armed with baskets and plenty of enthusiasm, we wandered through the fields, selecting the juiciest, sweetest strawberries we could find. The experience was not only fun and rewarding but also provided a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature and enjoy being outdoors. Afterwards, we explored the Farm Market, brimming with fresh produce, homemade goodies, and delightful treats. Fruit picking at Huber’s Orchard & Winery was a memorable and delicious experience that we highly recommend for anyone visiting Southern Indiana.

Culbertson Mansion (New Albany)

Clocking in at 20,000 square feet, with 25 rooms, the Culbertson Mansion in New Albany, Indiana was the home of one of Indiana’s wealthiest men at the time, William S. Culbertson. Built in 1867, it is a stunning example of Second Empire architecture that features beautifully restored rooms and elegant furnishings that reflect the grandeur of the Victorian era. It’s a true testament to the opulence and craftsmanship of the 19th century. The intricately hand-painted ceiling designs are original to the house and took years of restoration and rehabilitation to get them to look like they do today.

What made our tour even more unforgettable, besides the ceilings, was our tour guide, Chuck. He has been part of the Culbertson Mansion family for over 35 years. His passion and knowledge about this historic gem brought every room and story to life. From the stunning architecture to the fascinating history of the Culbertson family, Chuck’s insights made our visit truly special.

Historic Mansion Row (New Albany)

Historic Mansion Row in New Albany is a captivating showcase of beautiful 19th-century homes, including the well-known Culbertson’s Mansion. This scenic avenue is lined with beautifully preserved mansions that once belonged to the city’s most prominent families. Each mansion on this picturesque street tells its own story through stunning architectural details and rich histories, offering a glimpse into the lavish lifestyles of the past.

While most of these homes are now private residences, their exterior and historic significance can still be admired by visitors to the area. Walking down Mansion Row feels like stepping back in time, as you admire the intricate craftsmanship and timeless beauty of these historic homes. A visit to Mansion Row provides a unique journey through history and an appreciation for the architectural heritage of New Albany.

Schimpff’s Confectionery (Jeffersonville)

No trip to Southern Indiana is complete without a visit to Schimpff’s Confectionery in Jeffersonville, a delightful destination that has been serving up sweet treats since 1891. This historic candy shop and museum offers a charming glimpse into the past, where old-fashioned candy-making techniques are still in practice today. Stepping into Schimpff’s is like taking a journey through time, with its vintage décor, antique candy-making equipment, and the irresistible aroma of sweets filling the air.

One of the highlights of our visit was watching the candy-making demonstrations! This opportunity provides a fascinating look at what is involved in candy making, and visitors can even sample the freshly made sweets right off the production line. The Red Hots are amazing!

Schimpff’s Confectionery is more than just a candy shop; it’s a beloved local landmark that continues to delight visitors of all ages with its timeless charm and delectable sweets. Make sure to add it to your Southern Indiana itinerary for an unforgettable taste of history and tradition.

NoCo Arts & Cultural District (Jeffersonville)

The NoCo Arts & Cultural District, whose name stands for “North of Court, is a vibrant area that celebrates creativity and community. This area showcases colorful murals and unique sculptures that highlight the thriving local art scene. Strolling through NoCo, you’ll be captivated by striking murals and public art pieces that beautify the district and reflect the community’s rich art cultural.

Clark County Museum (Jeffersonville)

The Clark County Museum in Jeffersonville offers a deep dive into the rich history of Clark County and Southern Indiana. The Clark County Museum offers an educational experience with engaging displays and interactive exhibits that makes history come alive for visitors of all ages.

Conrad Caldwell Mansion (Louisville, KY)

(We know this isn’t located in Southern Indiana, but it’s just across the Ohio River and well worth the trip!)

They don’t build them like they used to! Nestled in the heart of the historic Old Louisville neighborhood, the Conrad-Caldwell Mansion beautifully captures the opulence and intricate design that went into homes of this era. Built in 1895, this Richardsonian Romanesque limestone mansion, was the dream home of Theophile Conrad, a wealthy French businessman. Later, it became the residence of William E. Caldwell, another prominent figure in Louisville’s history.

Each room on the main floor showcases a different type of wood, reflecting the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into the mansion’s construction. The grand staircase, a centerpiece of the home, is a marvel of design and elegance.

What made our visit even more delightful was our docent, Barb Coldwell-Huber, whose family once owned this magnificent home. Her personal connection to the mansion added a unique and enriching layer to our experience. Barb’s passion for her family’s legacy brought the history of the mansion to life, making the tour both informative and heartwarming.

After your tour, make sure you allow yourself some extra time to explore the charming Old Louisville neighborhood. This area is filled with beautiful historic homes, each with its own unique architecture. Old Louisville is one of the largest concentrations of Victorian homes in the United States!
