Capital Building Tour (First State Capital)
Did you know that Corydon was Indiana’s first state capital?!
Corydon was Indiana’s very first state capital, serving from 1816 until 1825 when it was changed to Indianapolis. This historic town played a pivotal role in shaping Indiana, and it’s where Indiana’s first constitution was drafted and signed.
What’s even more fascinating is that the original State Capitol building is still standing today, almost exactly as it was back in 1816!
This square, Federal-style building was built with limestone from local quarries between 1814 and 1816. Visitors can step back in time with a guided tour of this preserved piece of history, complete with original fireplace and flagstone floors. Walking through these very rooms gives you a true sense of the past, where early lawmakers laid the foundation for Indiana’s future. History lovers will be captivated by the stories and the building’s preserved features.
Constitution Elm
In June 1816, beneath the towering Constitution Elm, Indiana’s first constitution was drafted. This historic tree grew to a height of 55 feet, with a trunk diameter of 5 feet and a remarkable spread of 132 feet.
Though it lived until 1925, when it succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease, a preserved section of its trunk remains as a powerful reminder of Indiana’s beginnings. O’Bannon Woods State Park Fire Tower
Did you know there is a fire lookout tower you can climb in Indiana?!
This historic tower might remind you of the famous lookouts in Washington State, but it’s nestled among the rolling hills of the Harrison Crawford State Forest. The Wyandotte Tower, which was rebuilt in 1942 after a fire, is located at O’Bannon Woods State Park in southern Indiana.
This historic fire tower was once a critical part of forest fire prevention, providing a bird’s-eye view to spot potential wildfires. Today, only about a dozen of these towers remain across Indiana, standing as reminders of a time when fire lookouts were the eyes of the forest.
Indiana Caverns
Ever ridden a boat inside a cave WITH a waterfall?
At Indiana Caverns, you can embark on an unforgettable journey through one of the longest cave systems in the U.S. Explore the depths of an underground river, marvel at stunning rock formations, and discover prehistoric bones that are over 40,000 years old. Located in Corydon, Indiana, this adventure combines history, geology, and pure thrill—all in one epic underground experience.
Our tour guide, Colin, made the experience so enjoyable! His knowledge and enthusiasm brought the cave’s history and geology to life, making the tour both fun and educational.
Know Before You Go:
- The tour lasts about 75-90 minutes, offering a full experience of both walking and a boat ride.
- The temperature in the cave is 56 year round so you might want a sweatshirt or light jacket.
- Good walking shoes are recommended.
- You do have to walk up and down a spiral staircase during the tour.
- Indiana Caverns is open rain or shine.
- Don’t miss out on additional fun: soar on the Bat Chaser zip line, pan for treasures with gem mining, visit the friendly goats in the feeding area, and so much more!
Cave Country Canoes
Kayaking is one of our family’s favorite things to do together, and our half-day trip down the Blue River—Indiana’s first designated scenic river—with Cave Country Canoes was the perfect way to slow down and explore the beauty around us. We paddled 7 miles in about 3 hours, and it was a great way to spend the afternoon.
Here’s a quick checklist to make sure you’re ready for an awesome day on the water with Cave Country Canoes:
- Sunscreen
- Water shoes
- Swimsuits (You will get wet!)
- Dry bag for your phone and snacks
- Life jacket (they provide them!)
- Lockers available to rent if you need a spot to store your keys or dry clothes

Marengo Cave
Marengo Cave was discovered in 1883 by two young kids (imagine their surprise!), and has been a popular destination ever since.
But did you know that Marengo Cave is also a National Natural Landmark?!
The National Parks Service also designates Natural Landmarks that are recognized for their outstanding natural features, representing the best examples of our country’s natural heritage. One of these incredible spots just so happens to be Marengo Cave, located just outside of Corydon Indiana!
What is a National Natural Landmark?
The National Natural Landmarks program was created to recognize and encourage the conservation of sites that are biologically and geologically significant. Marengo Cave earned its spot as a U.S. National Landmark in 1984 due to its beautifully preserved limestone formations and underground rivers, offering a stunning example of karst topography!
You can enjoy two guided tours that wind through intricate passageways and massive rooms filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and other stunning formations. It’s the perfect family adventure, with a visitor center, gemstone mining, and walking trails above ground.
Tips Before You Go:
- There are two tours available: Crystal Palace (40 minute tour and the one we chose) and the Dripstone Trail (60 minute tour).
- Tours are available year-round, but make sure to check the schedule and plan ahead.
- Dress for cooler temperatures! Even in the summer, the cave stays around 52°F.
- Comfortable, non-slip shoes are a must since the cave can be damp.
Squire Boone Caverns
Squire Boone Caverns, hidden beneath the rolling hills of Southern Indiana, is more than just a natural wonder—it’s a piece of American history. Founded by Squire Boone, the brother of the famous frontiersman Daniel Boone, this cavern is not only breathtaking but also serves as Squire’s final resting place.
Explore underground streams and waterfalls that carry over a million gallons of water through the caverns each day, marvel at the largest brimstone dam in the country, and walk the same paths Squire Boone once did. This natural wonder is an unforgettable journey into history and beauty!

Located in downtown Corydon, the Discovery Center Museum provides a fun and interactive learning experience for kids and adults alike. The museum covers the region’s natural history, including exhibits on local wildlife, geology, and the Battle of Corydon. It’s a great hands-on, educational stop for families.
Corydon Farmer’s Market
For a taste of local flavor, stop by the Corydon Farmer’s Market. Here, you’ll find fresh produce, handmade goods, and locally crafted treats. It’s a wonderful place to chat with local vendors and support small businesses while picking up unique souvenirs or snacks for the road.
Make sure you stop by Singing Trees’ Keep booth for the best sourdough bread you will ever have! My kids are still talking about it!
