Ferry services themselves will be similar from St. Ignace and Mackinaw City. Which of these locations to depart from is really up to your personal preference and will depend on if you’re already in the upper or lower peninsula or if you wish to cross the Mackinac Bridge, which we highly recommend!

Crossing the Mackinac Bridge is a very unique experience. It is a 5-mile-long suspension bridge that connects Michigan’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas and crosses over water that connects Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. And yes, it sways… but you probably won’t notice that while driving.

If you have a fear of crossing bridges and would prefer not to do so, the Mackinac Bridge Authority offers drivers that can transport you across the bridge.

What do I do with my luggage?

When you arrive at the ferry dock, you’ll unload your luggage before parking your vehicle. Your luggage will be tagged with the details of the accommodations you’re staying at, and you’ll receive a claim ticket. It’s important to keep this ticket safe, as you’ll need it to claim your luggage once you arrive at your destination on Mackinac Island.

Your luggage will then be place on a cart which will be loaded onto the ferry. Once you’re on Mackinac Island, you have three options for handling your luggage:

  • Luggage Transfer Included: Some accommodations, like the Grand Hotel and Mission Point Resort, include luggage transfer to and from the ferry dock as part of their fee. They will be picked up from the docks and taken to the accommodation where they will be waiting for you upon check-in.
  • Dock Porter Service: Other accommodations use dock porters who will be waiting at the dock when you arrive. They are usually wearing shirts or jackets that say what accommodations they work for. Just show them which bags are yours and they will take them there for you. If your accommodations don’t have specific dock porters, you can find a dock porter and ask if they can take your luggage for you. The average tip is around $5 per bag.
  • Self-Transfer: Alternatively, you can locate your luggage at the dock and bring it to your accommodations yourself.

Can I bring a cooler on the ferry?

Is the unsecured parking safe?

Our families have used both the free (unsecured) and the paid parking lots without a problem. As with parking anywhere, I would suggest making sure that there is nothing visible, or of value, left in your car to reduce the temptation.

Which ferry company has the boats that make a “rooster tail” spray when traveling across the water?

Mackinac Island Ferry Company’s (formally Starline) ferries produce a 35 foot “rooster tail spray” as they travel across the water. They have seating options available onboard in the open-air or glass enclosed cabins, whichever you’d prefer.

Can I bring a pet on the ferry?

Yes! Shepler’s and Mackinac Island Ferry Company (formerly Starline) both allow pets on board the ferries, free of charge. Pets should be leashed or crated during the ferry ride, for their safety, as well as that of other passengers. They can sit on the floor by your feet or on your lap if they are small.
